Carson Binoculars
Carson is a New York company with a broad range of binoculars and related products, including zoom, full size, compact, special optics, as well as Night Vision telescopes and many other optical toys.
Carson is also not above being flashy; they are one of the few companies to experiment with color, including many primary colored cases and barrels that will set you apart from the other birders. While these are not ideal for hunters, they may even attract butterflies.
Carson also carries some novelty optics such as the table top telescope, with a distinctly antique look to it. It's also practical and it makes a good conversation piece or an interesting gift for the amateur astronomer who has everything else.
Some Carson binoculars
Some Carson models are praised for their uniqueness but criticized for low brightness. The binoculars we're really thinking of when we say this are the 20-80x25 SuperZoom. These binoculars have top-line magnification, but the image is much more muted than what you would get with a Brunton (for example). This is a consistent knock you will hear about these binoculars. Still, the ability to go from 20x to 80x with a relative flick of the wrist is quite cool, especially in a compact. The depth of field is slightly undone by its width - especially at 80x Zoom, where your field of vision is a little over 40 feet at 1,000 yards.
Carson also goes slightly higher in price. Their Optical Predator GT-140 (10x40) comes in just under $300.
Carson is a bit of an upstart in the world of binoculars, and occasionally its immaturity shows. They also have a substantial line of related products such as magnifiers. Their trademark Magni-Scope is three different optical devices in one - a monocular, magnifier and a unique 30x portable microscope.
Carson aims to be unique, and if you check out their line of binoculars and other optics you're almost sure to find something you like.
