Central Park, New York

Niagara Falls State Park, New York

Located in the heart of New York City, Central Park is a hub of activity for people and wildlife alike. The park opened in 1859 and has been a National Historic Landmark since 1963. It stretches across 843 acres and sees about 25 million visitors per year.

Millions of birds migrate from Latin America and the Caribbean each year, and many of them stop in Central Park on their way to the northern United States and Canada. In addition, many birds make their homes in Central Park year round. Almost 200 species of birds can be seen in the park during the year. Most are active in the early morning or late afternoon, but there's a degree of activity throughout the day.

Visitors to Central Park can take part in many activities. There are several walking tracks, two ice skating rinks, a large wooded area, a conservatory garden, and even a zoo. There are also many sculptures throughout the park, and an outdoor theater that hosts numerous plays and concerts. The abundance of trees in the park makes it an ideal spot for birding.

Some of the species that can be found in Central Park are the double-breasted cormorant, the red-throated loon, the green heron, mallards, and the snowy egret. See the Central Park website for more information.

The official state bird of New York is the Eastern Bluebird and you can find a checklist for birding activities in New York here.
