Patagonia, Arizona
Patagonia rests between Santa Rita Mountains and Patagonia Mountains, as a lush oasis in the desert.
Over 250 species of birds migrate here from Mexico, and can easily be found in the wetlands, pine forests, and grasslands. Spot a dozen hummingbird species in one afternoon.
Madera Canyon is found nearby, with a variety of habitats that make it a favorite place in South Arizona. Look for its rich woods, and the lush grasslands in its foothills. Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge, also nearby, offers wetlands that attract Gray Hawks and many other birds.
The Arizona Trail lies only three miles east of Patagonia, and provides a beautiful hiking experience. Sheep and cattle ranches abound, and the creeks that quench their thirst draw spectacular birds right into town.
Look for Cassin's and Botteri's Sparrows, Bunting and Rufous-winged Sparrows, Crescent-chested Warblers and Yellow-eyed Juncos, and Elegant Trogons along with Flame-colored Tanagers.
Apart from birdwatching, vineyards and wine tastings are a popular activity in Patagonia, inviting you to sample both beautiful birds and delicious wines. This makes Patagonia a wonderful, central town for resting and re-charging while on your next birding adventure.
The official state bird of Arizona is the Cactus Wren and you can find a comprehensive birding checklist for Arizona here.

If visiting Patagonia, consider camping at the state park on the lake. The facilities are a bit older, but well maintained.
The park is very large with plenty of space for overnight trailer camping, or tent spaces.
There is bate store with lots of supplies and a couple of boat launches.
The town of Patagonia is very quaint, about 20 minutes from the lake. Nice little town to walk around in.
This was one of our favorite camping spots and we'll go again in the future.
Universal Ranch RV Park www.universalranch.com at Buenos Aries National Wildlife Preserve Southern AZ.
More different bird sighting than anywhere in Western USA. Been there many years. Something new every year.
