Whitefish Point, Michigan

Why not birdwatch in Paradise? The Whitefish Point Bird Observatory offers a delightful birding experience within Paradise, Michigan, situated on the northeastern tip of Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Here a natural corridor has grown, where thousands of birds migrate every spring and fall during their travels through the Great Lakes.

Research and education are highlighted, with the Observatory offering many programs about birds and related ecology. Bird walks, tours, workshops, and classes help spread the importance of bird conservation and support.

The Evening Owl Flight is a particular treat, as a talk is given and viewers watch for the owls to begin their flights in the woods below the hawk dune. Owls are also spotlighted in the morning close up, when captive birds from the night's banding are shown during an in-hand display and ecological discussion.

Ten species of owls breed or winter in Michigan, including the Boreal, Snowy, Great Gray, and Northern Hawk Owls. April through mid-May is the best time to see these impressive creatures.

Eagles and other hawks such as the Red-tailed, Rough-legged, and Sharp-shinned species are found in April and May, while Broad-winged Hawks and Falcons arrive in late May. Songbirds and waterfowl also make their home here, although the raptors certainly win the most attention.

The Michigan state bird is the American Robin and you can find a checklist of birds to watch for in Michigan here.
