Leupold Binoculars
Leupold bills itself as “America’s optics authority.” They certainly do make a wide variety of optics for every occasion - from birding binoculars to hunting binoculars, all the way to digital cameras. They also have unique products like the Leupold monopod, a scope that can even double as a collapsible walking stick. Their tripod adaptors will make any pair of binoculars tripod-ready (and steady).
Leupold prides itself on knowing different markets well; they design products specifically for birders, hunters and even special ops.
Leupold pays attention to all aspects of optics, where some other companies focus on one aspect (such as image clarity). For example, Leupold offers a patented portable window mount that attaches to your vehicle’s window so you can easily (and steadily) sight from inside your car or truck.
Some Leupold binoculars
Leupold makes a number of interesting and unique models in the Wind River series. The new Wind River Cascades comes with a camouflage finish - fine for both hunters and birders. The Wind River Olympics are also fine and highly regarded instruments. The Wind River Pinnacles are more of a classic that incorporates some important features added over a few years of experience with the design and specifications. For example, in 2004, they introduced modified eyecups that were well…easier on the eyes.
The Leupold Katmais are also part of the Wind River catalogue. In general, the Wind Rivers are considered low-priced. These binoculars (the Katmais) are considered ideal for birding and other nature-viewing. Most models in this series have an objective lens of 32 mm, but the magnification can vary from 6x to 10x. These are nice for a few reasons: compactness, waterproofing and relative lightness of weight. They also combine a wide field of view and close focus (under six feet, for you birders and butterfly chasers). The 6x’s can be found for under $300, while the 10x might set you back $350 (or more if you don’t shop around online).
More Leupold extras
If you can’t find the right strap for your binoculars, look to Leupold. A strap seems like an extraneous item when considering a binocular purchase, but many a birder or hunter has had the experience of a bad strap that chafes after a while. Leupold has this problem in mind with its X-treme™ Binocular Strap - more of a harness than a strap. It fastens around your back and shoulders in a snug fit that takes the strain and discomfort out of wearing binoculars.
Check out Leupold, not only for their many binoculars but many optical accessories.
