Meade Binoculars

Meade is not famous for their binoculars, they are better known for two related items: telescopes and digital image capture. Meade's amateur telescopes are well-regarded, and they were the first company to dive into the image capture market. Meade is disliked in some quarters, but they do make some fine binoculars that are very practical.

Some binoculars by Meade
The Meade 8x56 Rainforest Pro is a fine pair of binoculars with water proofing. They are a bit on the heavy side - a little over 2 lbs. The nicest feature is the size of the aperture, and that's really where your money is going (these are priced near $500). These are hard to find new, but you may be able to find them used or at auction online.

Meade's Astros are a 9x63 with great light gathering. They are a fine purchase for the back yard astronomer. These can double for wildlife viewing or backyard birding in the dusk, when there's too little light and lots of wildlife. The Astros weigh 44 ounces and are priced under $200 (you might even be able to find them for close to $150).

Binoculars

The Meade CaptureView was the first of its kind - digital camera binoculars. These are also cheap, and we don't use that word lightly. The unfortunate thing about these is that they took an interesting concept and rushed it to market before it was really ready. The result is a technology that is already being maligned before it has really been given a proper run.

Meade does seem to be trying to corner the market on magnified image capture, even though the technology remains dubious. They have recently introduced an image capture telescope, though we have not seen any rave reviews of this, either. But some day in the not too distant future, someone (perhaps Meade) will make a pair of binoculars that will be able to capture a clear picture of a supernova's initial burst or the tenth planet. Until that time, realize that any purchase in this area is strictly guinea-pigging.
